Mumbai Government refers to the administrative body of Mumbai city. Mumbai is the capital city of Maharashtra and is hence the seat of the power of the entire state of Maharashtra. The present chief minister of the state is Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh and the deputy Chief Minister is R.R. Patil, they were voted to post in the year 2004 and their term is expected to end in the year 2009.
The governor of Mumbai is Muhammad Fazal. The administrative duty of Mumbai is exclusively the responsibility of the Municipal Corporation of Great Mumbai. Greater Mumbai comprises Mumbai Metropolitan Area, Thane and Navi Mumbai. The entire region is under the Biranmumbai Municipal Corporation or Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.

For the sake of effective administration, the entire Mumbai metropolis area is segregated into 227 wards. A councilor is elected from each ward and the Mayor of the Mumbai is elected from among the councilors. He is the representative head of Corporation of Mumbai. A huge responsibility of administering the corporation belongs to the municipal commissioner and the additional municipal commissioners.
The high court is not directly linked with administration but it helps in maintenance of juridical issues in Mumbai, Aurangabad, Goa and Nagpur. It was founded in 1862 and is located in, what was formerly known as the Fort of Mumbai. The court comprises of several judges and a chief justice. The court complex also houses the office of the Mumbai Sheriff. In the recent past, the post of the Sheriff has been done away with.
