The Gateway of India, a hugely constructed archway in the Indo-saracenic style is a significant landmark in Mumbai. Built out of concrete and yellow Kharodi basalt, this monument is a popular attraction for the tourists. The gateway features a central dome, with height of 83 feet and diameter of 48 feet. There are four turrets, with beautifully carved lattice work. The architecture dates back to the 16th century Muslim style. The Indian Government spent 21 lakhs to construct this great monument. Situated on the water front facing the sea, it offers a magnificent view to the visitors. The stairs behind the arch are connected down to the water level.
History of Gateway of India
Gateway of India dates back to the year1911, when the first stone was laid in the month of March. The monument was built in the memory of Queen Mary and the British King George V's tour to the city of Bombay. Constructed by a British, and designed by George Wittet, the gate was inaugurated on December 4th 1924, by the then Viceroy, Earl of Reading. As it was a built during the colonization of India, after the end of the British period, this monument became a symbol of historical importance.
