Flora Fountain


The Flora Fountain Mumbai is better known among the residents of Mumbai as the 'fountain' and the adjacent area as the 'fountain area'. The Flora Fountain was built in the later half of the 19th century in the fond memory of the Bartle Frere, a governor of Mumbai. The location of the statue is in the business center of Mumbai.

Flora Fountain at Hutanama Chowk

The Flora Fountain in Mumbai is located at the Hutanama Chowk, Fort, Mumbai, MH: 400 001. This is a statue cum fountain, set amidst a picturesque flower garden. This structure was erected in honor of Bartle Frere, the erstwhile governor of Mumbai. The Hutanama Chowk was so named in 1960, prior to which it was called the Martyr's Square.

Architectural Glimpse of Flora Fountain

The Flora Fountain Mumbai was the venture of the Agri-Horticultural society of Western India but was funded by
Cursetjee Fardoonjee Parekh. It was built in 1864. He had donated 20,000 in Indian Currency, which was a rather lavish amount at the time of construction. However, it ultimately took rupees 27,000 more to construct the entire structure. The fabulous design of the architecture is the work of the R. Norman Shaw but the actual statue was sculpted by James Forsythe. The statue is made of stone, which was specially brought from Portland. The stone statue is painted white with oil color.

Getting To Flora Fountain

Once the tourists reach Mumbai, the Flora Fountain in Mumbai is easy to reach. The structure is located in the city center, some thirty kilometers from Mumbai International Airport or the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport. This area is the business center and hence a good number of Public buses commute passengers to the Flora Fountain of Mumbai. A number of important places of Mumbai are located close by, including the some banks, shops, offices and educational institutions. The former Mumbai Churchgate too was located here.
