A Glimpse of Mumbai Festivals

  • Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated very religiously in Mumbai city. This is one of the popular festivals in the city that is observed with enthusiasm for 10 days. Usually this festival is observed during September or August. Gudi Padva is one of the Mumbai festivals that is observed in March or April. The people of Maharashtra observe this festival as they bid adieu to the previous year and welcome a new year.

  • Id-ul-Fitr is observed by the Muslim communities in Mumbai in November. Janamashtmi is one of the festivals of Mumbai that is celebrated to mark the birthday of Krishna. Fun and religious spirit is associated with this festival. Diwali is also observed in Mumbai. At the Mumbai Shopping Festival visitors can buy a wide range of products. They can choose from jewelry, garments, automobiles, books or sports goods. In 2008, it will be organized in January.
  • In the month of August, Nariel Purnima is observed in Mumbai, which indicates that monsoon season has ended. This festival is mainly observed by the Kolis in Mumbai. Among
    the festivals of Mumbai, the New Year celebration by the Parsi community in Mumbai should be mentioned. Christmas is also observed in Mumbai with much splendor. Mount Mary's Feast is arranged in the city that continues for one week in the month of September.

  • Mumbai organizes a Mango Festival where the visitors can buy mangoes of different varieties. The Banganga Festival in Mumbai is organized for two days. It is a festival of Classical music of India. The Elephanta Festival is observed at the Elephanta Islands near Mumbai. This festival is associated with music and dance performances.

  • Some of the popular Mumbai events include the Mumbai International Film Festival and the Mumbai Filmfare Awards. Both the events are organized annually. At the Mumbai International Film Festival, one will get to see many films that are chosen from India and abroad. Films from Germany, United Kingdom, Egypt, Poland and many more countries are screened here every day. Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image takes the responsibility to organize this event in Mumbai.

  • Mumbai Filmfare Awards is attended by many film personalities of Mumbai film industry. Hindi films along with regional films are awarded in this ceremony. There are about 30 categories for which awards are given at the Mumbai Filmfare Awards. This is a very important award ceremony in Mumbai film industry.
