Mumbai Ethnic Groups


Mumbai ethnic groups comprise mainly of the Jewish community, Parsis and the Kolis. There are some other communities like Sindhis, Pathare Prabhus and Konkanis residing in Mumbai city. The population of Mumbai according to the census report of 1991 is about 12.5 million people. But by present day, it is estimated that the population of the city has gone up to about 14 or 15 million.

Almost half of the total population of Mumbai in India is not of Maharashtrian origin. People from other states of India have settled in this city. Mainly after India gained its independence, the total population of the city started growing.

The Gujarati community has settled in areas of south Mumbai, Juhu, Kandivali, Mulund, Vile Parle and Ghatkopar. People from south India have settled in Marol and Chembur. People from states like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have also come to settle in

the metropolitan city of Mumbai. Both Bene-Israelis and Baghdadi Jews reside in Mumbai. The Bagdadi Jews came to Mumbai around 18th century. They follow the religion of Judaism and speak Arabic. The Bene-Israelis also follow Judaism but they speak the Marathi language.

Among the ethnic groups of Mumbai, the Parsis are an important community. Another community of people residing in Mumbai is the Kolis. This community mostly includes the fishermen who are considered to be the original settlers of Mumbai.

Muslim communities like Khojas and the Bohras live here. These two communities of Muslims came from Gujarat and they belong to the Shia sect of Islam. The Pathare Prabhus are also known as the Patane Prabhus. They came to Mumbai from Patan located in the state of Gujarat. The Konkanis, one of the Mumbai ethnic groups had come from Goa. The Konkani people speak in Konkani dialect.
