Mumbai Demography


Mumbai demography consists of the people residing in the city. According to Census of 1991, the population of Mumbai was 12.5 million. People from various parts of India, came to Mumbai after India became an independent country.

There are numerous ethnic groups in Mumbai. The groups belong to different communities who came to this city at different points of time. Some of the groups are the Parsis, Jews and the Kolis. Sindhis, Konkanis and Pathare Prabhus also reside in Mumbai.

The statistics of Mumbai demography was enriched as people with multi ethnicity came to this Maharashtrian city of India. Some of them have adopted the culture of Mumbai while others have stuck to their very own ethnic characteristics.

Thus, Mumbai is resided by both Maharashtrian as well as non Maharashtrian people. Out of the total population of Mumbai, about only 4% is comprised of Christians, 17% of Muslims, 68% of Hindus and about 4% of Buddhists. In Mumbai the population density per sq kilometer is about 45,662. The approximate rate of literacy in Mumbai is about 77 per cent. The rate of female literacy in Mumbai is about 71.6% and the rate of male literacy in the city is about 82%.

Mumbai, the metropolitan city of India can boast of its famous personalities. People of Mumbai have made their name in different fields. Mumbai is famous for its film industry or Bollywood. The film industry of Mumbai possesses some of the actors whose popularity spread beyond the sub continent of India. Actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan have become very popular among movie lovers.

The Mumbai film industry is also proud of famous lyricists like Gulzar, Majrooh Sultanpoori and Javed Akhtar. Asha Bhosle, wife of the famous music director Rahul Dev Burman has made her career as a popular singer in Bollywood. Karan Johar is a young talent and has made his place in the film industry of Mumbai as a film director.

Industrialists like Ratan Tata, J.R.D. Tata, Adi Godrej, Mukhesh Ambani and Ness Wadia are associated with Mumbai. These industrialists of India had made their name not only in trade and commerce of India but also in the global market.

World famous cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar are also associated with this Indian city. Kaifi Azmi and Ranjit Hoskote are known to people of India for their beautiful poetry.
