Crawford Market is a favorite shopping destination in the Southern part of Mumbai. It is located in the opposite side of Police headquarters and in the north side of Victoria railway station. This popular Mumbai market is named after the Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, Arthur Crawford. Officially, this place is known by the name Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Market.
In the year 1869, this market building's construction work was completed. One of the striking features of this building is its Clock Tower that is decorated in the Victorian-style. It is said that Cowasji Jehangir has donated this building to the city. JJ School of Art is situated in close proximity to this market area.
Till 1966, this market place had been the most-preferred wholesale market of Mumbai. It is covering an approximate land of 72000 square yards. The market building is the perfect combination of Flemish and Norman style of architecture. In the entranceway there is an interesting frieze depicting peasants of India in the wheat fields. Lockwood Kipling has given design of this market place. It is constructed in such a way so that it can get enough sunlight in the daytime.
