The Architectural Style of Museum Building
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Museum, Mumbai is also known as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya. The museum owes its unique construction style to George Wittet. The building of the museum is inspired from Indian sculpture of the 15th and 16th century AD. The museum building was constructed in 1909 and this architectural style is known as Indo-Saracenic style. At the time of construction, the museum was called the Price of Wales Museum. The building was so named after King George V, who was the Prince of Wales.

The Museum has a collection of historically important Indian objects from three different historical periods. Apart from the section housing the archaeological artifacts, there are two other sections, which house objects related to natural history and art. The archaeological finds are from the period of Gupta rule, Mauryan rule and from the Indus Valley civilization. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum is located in 159-161, M.G. Road, Fort, Mumbai – 400023. Frequent buses, autos and taxis commute to the place. The Museum premises remain open for public viewing from 10.30 in the morning to 6 in the evening. On Mondays, the museum remains closed.
