Brabourne Stadium


Brabourne Stadium is located on the Churchgate in South Mumbai and can accommodate 20,000 sport lovers. This stadium was inaugurated on 7th December, 1937 by the then Governor of Bombay, Sir Lawrence Roger Lumley. The Cricket Club of India owns this stadium and the BCCI offices are housed inside the stadium premises. The two end names of the ground are Pavillion End and Church Gate End.

History of Brabourne Stadium

The plot where Brabourne Stadium stands was presented by the Governor of Mumbai, Lord Brabourne, to the Cricket Club of India. On Patiala Maharaja's suggestion, the stadium was named after Lord Brabourne, who laid the foundation stone on 22nd May, 1936. After the stadium was constructed, the Bombay Pentagular Gymkhana was shifted to this venue between the year1937-38. Initially, after its opening, the Bombay Pentagular tournament was mostly hosted on the grounds. It also served as a multi sports ground with various tournaments being held on the venue.

Facts about Brabourne Stadium

The first match was held on the incomplete grounds
between Spencer Cup XI and CCI, in October, 1937. Between 1948 and 1972, several test matches, including Bombay Pentagular tournaments were played in this venue. There were 17 test matches hosted on this ground before 1973. A one-day international tournament was played between Australia and Pakistan in the year 1989. The countries who have played at this ground are West Indies, New Zealand, Australia, and Pakistan. Some of the popular cricketers who scored hundred on this ground were Vijay Hazare, Denis Compton and Ajit Wadekar.

In the recent times, the Davis Cup Asia Oceania tournament was hosted at the Brabourne Stadium. Of the four grounds where ICC Champions Trophy was hosted in 2006, Brabourne Stadium is one of them.

Reaching Brabourne Stadium Mumbai

Tourists can reach the stadium from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport or Victoria Terminus by bus or can hire taxis that are easily available. It takes around 45 minutes by local train to reach Churchgate railway station, which is located at a walking distance from the stadium.
