Bollywood


Mumbai is the major center of Hindi movie industry, which is popularly known as Bollywood. The term Bollywood has been coined by merging the term Hollywood (film industry of America) and Bombay (present name Mumbai). According to Bollywood film record, each year more than 1000 Hindi movies are produced in Mumbai.

Bollywood is in fact a section of the entire film industry of India. Bollywood movies are considered to be one of the main sources of entertainment. Around 3.6 billion people watch Hindi movies, which is more than half of the entire population of the world. Most of these movies are complete packages of entertainment.

Those films include all types of entertaining elements, such as, dance, music, action, melodrama and so on. Sometimes English language is also used in Bollywood movies. Most of the Hindi films are packed with lovely songs. Sometimes item numbers are also incorporated to enhance the popularity of the films. Comedy movies are also quite common among the Hindi film directors.

In 1913, the first silent Bollywood feature film was produced by Dadasaheb Phalke. Till now it is considered to be a remarkable film in Bollywood. During 1930's film industry of Bombay begun to make over 200 films each year. On the other hand, Alam Ara is first sound film of India. It was produced by Ardeshir Irani. At the end of 1950s, colored films were introduced for the first time. Kisan Kanya was the first color film in India.

The films that were produced at that period were purely melodramatic and were full of songs. Presently, while watching Bolloywood movies, it can be well understood how cinematography and quality of film production have improved. Now-a-days directors have more faith in experimentation and innovation. Presently, the new techniques of filmmaking have given Bollywood cinema a new dimension.

Bollywood movies have also acquired international recognition. On the basis of production, Bollywood is the biggest movie industry throughout the world. Kagaz ke Phool is the first Bollywood cinemascope movie. On the other hand, 'Shiva ka Insaaf' is the first 3D Hindi film.

While talking about Bollywood, the film, 'Noorjahan' also deserves mention. It is the first English movie produced in the Indian film industry. Each year, Hindi film industry organizes over 6 award programs.

Some of the most popular Bollywood actors are Amitabh Bachchan, Jitendra, Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Kajol, Ajay Devgan and Amir Khan.

On the other hand some of the singers of this field include Shaan, Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghosal, Sunidhi Chuhan and Kavita Krishnamurthy. Some of the renowned choreographers are Faraah Khan and Saroj Khan, whereas, some of the renowned Bollyowood Music Directors are Anu Malik, Ismail Darbar and Adesh Shrivastav.
