Bandra Mumbai is an important location in the Western suburbs of Mumbai. Bandra in Mumbai is referred to as the 'queen of the suburbs'. Bandra most likely is the modified form of the Marathi word 'vandre' meaning port. It might also have been derived from the Persian word 'bandar' meaning port.
Bandra History
In 12th century Bandra was under the rule of the Shilahar dynasty. The Portuguese captured this place in 1543, and subsequently transferred its ownership together with Sion, Parel and Wadala to the Jesuit priests. Towards the end of the 16th century the Jesuits built the Santa Anna Church. Bandra has an exceptional six Roman Catholic Churches within an area of 4 square kilometers. The internationally renowned Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount is one amongst these six churches.
