Asha Bhonsle


Asha Bhonsle is a legendary singer from Mumbai who has sung some 1,200 songs, most of which are playback songs for movies. Though Asha Bhonsle is a trained classical singer, her singing career covers music of all genres including ghazals, pop music, cabaret songs, romantic songs, songs suitable for discotheques. Her singing career spans almost six decades and surprisingly her voice is still as much in demand for lending her voice for play back singing.

Music Career of Asha Bhonsle

Asha Bhonsle made her debute early in life at the age of ten with the playback song in the Marathi cinema, Majha Bal. Her recognition did not come immediately but years later. Her first venture into Hindi movie songs was in 1948 in the movie, Chunaira. She sang the song, Saawan Aaya'. Following this, she took up many odd projects for play back singing but could not manage to get to sing for the lead actors. This did not discourage her and she continued her singing career with full dedication primarily because she had a family to support.

Asha Bhonsle got her first major recognition for singing in Mangke Saath Tumhara in Naya Daur in 1957. Other play back songs which had contributed to her recognition includes Koi Aaya Dhadhkan Kehti Hai from Lajwanti, Dekhne Mein Bhola Hai from Bombai ka Babu, Aayee Mehrban from Howrah Bridge, Bhanwara Bada Nadan from Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and Kali Ghata Chaye from Sujata to name just a few.
O.P. Nayar and S.D. Burman are the men who are to be credited for recognizing the talent within Asha Bhonsle. Composer S.D. Burman had trained and polished Asha Bhonsle for his project and following this Asha Bhosle delivered the biggest musical hits in India. By then, her musical skills were recognized as per those of famous singers such as her sister Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum.

Asha Bhonsle is the two time winner of national awards and eight time winner of filmfare awards. This apart, she has been honored with various other awards including the BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, the MTV and Channel V Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award and many more.

Family Life of Asha Bhonsle and Other Ventures

Asha Bhonsle was born Asha Mangeshkar to parents Sudhamati Mangeshkar and Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar. She has four other siblings, Lata Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Mangeshkar and Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Apart from Lata Mangeshkar, Hridaynath and Usha have also sung for Hindi movies. Asha Bhonsle was twice married, first time to Ganapatro Bhonsle and then to R.D. Burman. She has three children. She owns a restaurant in Debai and is about to launch her autobiographical book.
