Mumbai Architecture is a blend of the Gothic and contemporary styles. Mumbai's architectural beauty is evident from the buildings, structures and the historical monuments that gradually developed since the 18 and 19th century. There are a few Indo-Saracenic styled buildings and a few art deco architectural landmarks in the city as well.
Heritage Committee in Mumbai
With conscious attempts made by architects, citizens and historians, a heritage committee was formed to preserve the tradition architectural heritage of Mumbai in the year 1995. A grading system under the heritage regulations is used to list the different architectural buildings. The importance landmarks that are of national significance are categorized as Heritage Grade I. Grade II includes those buildings which are important in the region and Grade III buildings are important in the town.
Gothic Architecture in Mumbai
Most of the buildings that were built during the British period, has British influence in the architecture, the most important being the Gothic and Victorian styles. The town hall in Bombay was built during the period 1820 and 1835, by Colonel Thomas Cowper. During Governor Sir Bartle Frere's rule, the old town was demolished and the Gateway of India was constructed in its place. This gateway is an example of the Gothic architecture. Subsequently, many more structures of the same style were erected.
The Mumbai University Library, The Secretariat, Telegraph Office, Victoria Terminus and Rajabai Towers are to name a few.
Indo Saracenic Architecture in Mumbai

This style, which developed during the later half of 19th century, was a combination of the Islamic and the Hindu architectural styles. The main features of the Indo Saracenic Style were the construction of domes, arches, spires, stained glasses and minarets. The interiors have victorian influences while the exterior was Indian. Examples of the Indo Saracenic Style in Mumbai are the Gateway of India and the Prince of Wales Museum.
Mumbai's Art Deco Architecture
This style developed during the 1930's. A number of buildings that were built during that period were based on the Art Deco style. The style features angular shapes with facades that are very airy and built in stepped -back style. Eros Cinema, designed by architect Sohrabji Bhedwar, is fine examples of the art deco style.
