The epitome of traditional architecture of the Europeans, Writers’ Building stands tall with its majestic edifice in central Kolkata. Popularly known as Mahakaran, Writers’ Building is the political and administrative seat of the State Government of West Bengal. Located to the north of Benoy Badal Dinesh Bag or BBD Bag in Dalhousie, Writers’ Building is spread over an area of 10 acres.
Writers’ Building was constructed in 1780 by the famous English architect, Thomas Linas at the instruction of the Collector of Calcutta of that time period. The marvelous building was initially built to provide accommodation to the writers and clerks of the East India Company. However, during the

present times, Writers’ Building houses the Chief Ministers’ Office and offices of the other Ministers of the state.
Writers’ Building has 34 floors. About 6000 administrative staffs have their offices in Writers’ Building. Writers’ Building is easily reachable from all parts of Kolkata by road, railway lines and metro rail. The closest railway station is Sealdah and the near by metro rail station is Esplanade. The offices of Writers’ Building remain open from 9 am to 6 pm. Photography and video recording are not allowed within the premises of Writers’ Building for security measures.
