Built in 1992 with 121 cable wires, Vidyasagar Setu is one of the major attractions of Kolkata. Popularly referred to as the Second Hooghly Bridge, the Vidyasagar Setu is a connector between Kolkata and Howrah. The Vidyasagar Setu on River Hooghly comprises 9 by-lanes that provide easy movement of 85,000 automobiles per day.
Situated at a distance of 2 kilometers from the old Howrah Bridge, the Vidyasagar Setu was constructed at a total cost of Rs. 3.88 billion. The length and breadth of the Vidyasagar Setu is 457 meter and 115 meter respectively. The huge bridge rests on four steel

towers that are based at a depth of 100 meters below the river bed.
The Vidyasagar Setu connects Calcutta with all the other states and metropolitan cities of Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai of India. The Vidyasagar Setu has solved the problem of heavy traffic in Kolkata. A toll fee is charged from the vehicles passing through the bridge.
