Uttam Kumar was born in Ahiritola, a place in North Kolkata or Calcutta in 1926. His childhood name was Arun Kumar Chatterjee. Uttam Kumar, the charismatic hero of Bengali cinema has become a legendary screen persona.
Uttam Kumar was interested in acting on stage from his childhood days. He also took interest in sports. He was into a number of sports and was a swimming champion. As he grew up, he fixed the aim of his life to be an actor.
In the initial years of his acting career, Uttam Kumar followed the prevalent theatrical style of acting. But later he resorted to natural pattern of acting. Uttam Kumar started his career as a clerk in Port Commissioner's Office after he completed his graduation. In 1948, Uttam Kumar married Gauri Ganguly and in 1950 their son Gautam was born.

Uttam Kumar worked in a Hindi film called Mayador for the first time but this film was not released. Drishdidaan is Uttam Kumar's first film to be released. But this film did not meet with much success. In 1949 Kamana was released. In this film Uttam Kumar played the lead role but it too did not turn to be a successful cinema.

Kumar's films with Suchitra Sen were great hit among the audience of Bengali cinemas. Suchitra Sen paired with this great actor in Harano Sur, Pathey Holo Deri, Agni Pariksha and Indrani which faced great success in the box office.

He was also interested in directing, writing screenplay and composing music. On 24th July, 1980 Uttam Kumar passed away in Belleveue Clinic in Kolkata.
