Travel in Kolkata


Traveling in Kolkata can be a very rewarding experience, especially if you are new to the city. The city has a rich cultural heritage. The tourist attractions apart, there is much to explore, mainly during the festive season. It is advisable to stay informed about the modes of transportation in Kolkata. The roads in Kolkata are well developed, especially to the southern region.

The northern part of Kolkata is relatively old and the roads are not so well planned. Yet the Northern part of Kolkata and to some extent the central part bears the evidence of the past culture and tradition of the city. The most convenient modes of public transport in Kolkata include buses, trams, taxis, metro rail, auto rickshaws, cycle rickshaws, hand pulled rickshaws, shuttle services.

Bus Travel in Kolkata

The buses in Kolkata are of different types. There are both government buses and private buses. A smaller type of bus called the mini bus is also seen on the roads of Kolkata. They are the cheapest means of transport in Calcutta. The Esplanade bus stop is a very important one because many a outstation buses depart from this bus stop. Bus services are most frequent during office hours and become scarce at night. Luxury buses can be availed by those who prefer to do away with
the usual commotion and heat. The luxury buses are usually air-conditioned.

Travel by Metro Rail in Kolkata

After the introduction of Metro rail, a huge part of the daily crowd has been efficiently managed. Kolkata is in fact the first city in India to have underground railways. Work is in progress to cover a greater distance by metro service. Presently, the metro rail runs from Dumdum in north Calcutta to Tollygunge in South Calcutta. After the completion of the expansion, the metro rail will extend up to New Garia.

Taxi Travel in Kolkata

Taxis travel is the fastest way to travel from one place to another in Kolkata. Though they are a bit more expensive, the price is worth the comfort and speed. Taxis can be identified by their yellow color and the Ambassador model. In the recent years, LPG run taxis and prepaid taxis have also been introduced.

Traveling by Tram in Calcutta

Kolkata is the last stronghold of tram service in India and as such is considered among one of the most valued assets of the city. Though they are relatively slow, they do not cause pollution. Electric trams were introduced during the early 20th century at the time of British rule in India.
