Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta


Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta is one of the well known singers of Bengali music. She creates, composes and sings all by herself. She has not only mastered the rendition of Rabindra Sangeet (songs of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore), but is at equal ease with devotional and modern Bengali songs.

Early Life of Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta

Singer Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta took her initial lessons in classical music from her father Pabitra Dasgupta an established classical vocalist. She did her Masters in Music from Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata. She took her lessons in Rabindra Sangeet from Maya Sen, an authority in Rabindra Sangeet.

In 1985 Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta stood first in the All India Singing Talent Contest. In 1986 she stood first in the Rabindra Sangeet and Bhajan categories of All India Music Competition organized by All India Radio. In the same year she once again stood first in the West Bengal Rajya Music Competition in the categories of Rabindra Sangeet and Atul Prasadee. Subsequently, she became an ‘A’ grade artist of Akashbani (All India Radio) and Doordarshan. She also became a permanent artist of HMV Sa Re Ga Ma.

Achievements of Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta

Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta's initial achievements came in the form of 1st prizes she had won in the Singing Talent Competitions held in 1985 and 1986. Subsequently, in 1989-90 she was invited by the patrons of Rabindra Sangeet to perform in London and Belgium.

  • Ekla Geetabitan – In this Herculean effort, Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta recorded 2023 Tagore songs between February 2006 and June 2006. The collection was released in August 2006 by Suchitra Mitra, legendary singer of Rabindra Sangeet
  • Ramayan – A dance drama consisting of 40 songs and dialogues composed by Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta in the same style as Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore
  • Rabindra Sangeet Albums - Meghmallar, Taire Naire Naire Na, Rajaneer Sesh Tara, Dakhin Haowa, Eshecho Prem, Agun Jalo, He Nutan, Jiban Devata, Ebaar Beena Tomay Amay
  • Devotional Song Albums – Samiran Kar Le, Om – Vol 1 & 2, Maa, Namo Namoh, Om Shanti

Swagatalaksmi Dasgupta has a number of awards to her credit. For the decade 1990-99 she won the Cha-Cha-Cha Award for outstanding contribution to music. She won the Anandolok best female playback singer for the years 1998, 2002, and 2003. She received the Dishari (Film Journalist's) Award for best female playback in 1998-99. In 1997 she was awarded the Uttam Kumar Award for Esecho Prem Rabindra Sangeet Cassette. She got the Sailajaranjan Award in 1998.
