Sunil Gangopadhyay


Sunil Gangopadhyay, a famous personality of Calcutta, is a well-known modern Bengali writer. He was born on 7th September 1934 in the Machipara village located in the district of Faridpur, now in Bangladesh. He is one of the most distinguished Indian writers, highly regarded for his excellent contributions to Bengali literature. The short stories, novels, poems and plays written by Sunil Gangopadhyay have succeeded in creating a remarkable impression on the minds of the reader. “Ekti Chithi” was the first poem written by Sunil Gangopadhyay in the year 1951.That year itself, he was the editor of the magazine Agami Sahitya. “Bacha” was the first story written by Sunil Gangopadhyay and published in the magazine named “Idaning”. However, “Tumi” his fourth poem published in 1953 drew attention from the people and earned him fame and name.

Early Life of Sunil Gangopadhyay

In his childhood, Sunil Gangopadhyay studied at the town school located in North Kolkata. He pursued higher education at three colleges namely Dum Dum Motijheel College, Surendranath College and City College. He obtained masters degree in economics from Calcutta University in the year 1954. He worked for the Adult Education Scheme of UNESCO for three months, after which he joined the New India Assurance Company. Later he resigned the job and started working with Anadabazar Patrika as a sub editor.
