Subrata Mukherjee is a noted politician from Kolkata, who is primarily remembered for his role as the Mayor of Kolkata. His political career had begun from the days of his college life when he campaigned for the Youth Congress party in the 1970s. Consequently, he took active participation in Congress. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly before being voted to the designation of Mayor of Kolkata in 2000. What counts for the success of Mukherjee as a mayor is his inherent civic sense that drove him to work on projects that have enhanced the beauty and cleanliness of Calcutta.

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee had done much to give Kolkata an overall face-lift. Many broken roads and footpaths were renovated and bordered
with proper hedges. The major sites of renovation includes Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Harish Mukherjee Road, BBD Bag, Park Street, Rashbehari

Avenue, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Road, Bhupen Bose Avenue, Bidhan Sarani, APC Road and Camac Street. He also designed plans for other projects for which huge fundings were required. The funding of these projects necessitated the cooperation from industrialists and corporate giants.
His down to earth approach towards the citizens of Kolkata made him very popular. There had been instances when he went out in person to increase awareness about environment and civic sense. In March 2003, Subrata Mukherjee met Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, to discuss issues on the welfare of the citizens of Kolkata. The Department of International development had organized this tour of Subrata Mukherjee. It can be said that along with Kolkata, the work culture of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation too underwent a major make over.
Subrata Mukherjee lost the elections in 2006 to Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya. Even after the conclusion of the terms of his mayorship, he has been taking interest in socio-political issues in West Bengal. He is presently the vice-president of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee.
