The college is recognized by DOEAC and IGNOU. In 1976 all the college departments became co-educational, except for the B. Com. In 1882, the college got affiliation from the Calcutta University.
The courses offered by this college include B.A courses in Political Science, English and Sociology. It offers B.Sc.(Hons.) Courses in Physics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Statistics.
The primary aim of St. Xaviers college is to look after the complete development of its students. Through its unique study methods it helps its pupils to achieve excellence in every field. Throughout the year, a number of fests (among which Xavotsav is the most popular one) are held in the college. There is also a club in the college campus. Added to this, in the college magazine, the students are encouraged to express their opinions freely.
In 2006, St. Xavier's College organized its yearly Invitational Tournament from 15th -23rd September. This tournament included a number of football, throw ball, basketball and table tennis events. Here several colleges participated. Some among them are Jadavapur University, IIM, NUJS, Heritage Institute of Technology and Marine Engineering and Research Institute. College's Sports Department usually look after these sports activities.
