Shishir Kumar Maitra was a well-known academic philosopher. In the year 1887, this great personality was born in a Brahmin family. His father was in teaching profession and used to teach in Ravenshaw College and Presidency College. As he was free from all sorts of prejudices and orthodoxy, Shishir Kumar got a free and healthy atmosphere that made him liberal in his views.
When he was in college, he had a great admiration for the German philosopher, Hegel. Shishir Kumar Maitra used to give priority on reasonable thinking. However Henri Bergson's philosophy deeply moved him and he spent a lot of time in studying that philosophy.
He was associated with the Banaras Hindu University where he was the Head of the Philosophy Department and Dean of the Arts Faculty. It is seen that his writing is the perfect fusion of western and eastern philosophy.
