Rudraprasad Sengupta is a well known theater personality of India. He is known for his contributions in promoting ‘Theater’ as a source of entertainment as well as a platform for voicing opinions on social issues.
Early Life of Rudrapasad Sengupta
Rudraprasad is the son of Anant Sengupta and Usha Prabha Sengupta of East Bengal (now Bangladesh). He graduated from Calcutta University. He completed both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in English from Calcutta University. He studied in the Scottish Church College, Calcutta. He took up the job as an English teacher in his early career for sometime.
Works of Rudrapasad Sengupta
Rudraprasad joined a theater group in Kolkata called ‘Nandikar’, in 1961. However, he was not involved in acting or directing any play until early 1970’s. The scope of acting, directing and adapting the plays came automatically to him. Once into it, he proved his best. He gradually went on to become the leader of the ‘Nandikar’ theater group in late 1970’s. His first directorial venture, ‘Antigone’, was an
instant hit which was highly appreciated by the media. The play also had relevance with the 1975 political scenario

in India and hence made it more appealing to the masses. Rudraprasad’s works are primarily adaptations of classics. He earned much appreciation for his successful adaptations of Sophocles's ‘Antigone’ and Peter Terson’s ‘Jigger Jagger’ (which was named as ‘Football’).
Rudraprasad acted in a few movies as well. Bernardo Bertolucci’s ‘Little Budhha’ (released in 1993) and Roland Joffé’s ‘City of Joy’ (released in 1992) are two famous movies that featured Rudraprasad Sengupta.
Besides directing and acting as part of ‘Nandikar’, Rudraprasad devoted much time and energy towards building the organization and taking it to new heights. Under his leadership ‘Nandikar’ became one of the leading theater groups in India. Not only that, Nandikar started performing outside India as well. From a theater group, it became an organization which started arranging mega events like the annual National Theater Festival.

Rudraprasad Sengupta was awarded with the National Award from Sangeet Natak Academy in 1980 in the category of best director.
