Rotary Club of Kolkata


Rotary Club of Kolkata was set up on 26th September in 1919. This club of Kolkata was founded some months after the Rotary Clubs at Shanghai and Manila was founded. The Rotary Club of Kolkata is considered as the oldest of the Rotary Clubs in Asia as the previous two clubs stopped their activities during the World War II. The motto of Rotary Club of Kolkata is "Be Firm in Adversity".

The President of Rotary Club of Kolkata for the years 2007 to 08 is Mr. Partha Sadhan Bose. Rotary Club of Calcutta is involved in catering to community services. The club extends aid to the needy and poor. Round the year, the Rotary Club of Calcutta arranges medical camps for free health check ups. The club sets up camps at different locations of the city and often travels to the outskirts.

The members of the Club distribute free medicines to the ailing people visiting the camps. Blood donation camps are also set up by this organization. It set up camps to offer doses of pulse polio on National Immunization Day. Eye check ups are also done and
spectacles are distributed. The club arranges special health check up camps for children. Rotary Club of Kolkata sometimes distributes text books to street children. It takes the street children for outing and excursions.

After Paul Harris the archive of Rotary Club of Kolkata was named. The archive was set up in 1991 to preserve various photographs, records, trophies and books belonging to the club authority. The Rotary Sadan was established in 1997.

Rotary Club of Kolkata had some renowned personalities as its members. Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, Sir Surendranath Banerjee, Tom Cashmore, A.F.M. Abdul Ali and Sir Deva Prasad Sarbadhikari were some of the noted members of Rotary Club of Kolkata.

The weekly meetings at Rotary Club of Kolkata were headed by some reputed speakers. Among them were Mahatma Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu, Dr. B.C. Roy, Sir C.V. Raman, Clement Atlee, Sir Stanley Jackson, V.V. Giri, Satyajit Ray, Dalai Lama, Jyoti Basu and K.R. Narayan who attended the weekly meetings as its speakers.
