Rabindranath Tagore


Rabindranath Tagore was born in a Pirali Brahmin Family to parents Sarala Devi and Maharshi Debendranatha Tagore. He gave a new identity to Bengali literature. Tagore experimented with different issues and with a versatile range of literary forms. He started writing poems in early part of his career. His first anthology of poem was published in 1877 when he was just sixteen. He won the Noble Prize in 1913 for Geetanjali. The Queen of Great Britain honored him with Knighthood in 1919. Rabindranath Tagore is the lyricist of the Indian National Anthem, 'Jana Gana Mana'.

Rabindranath Tagore is perhaps most popular for his poems and songs. Many of his poems have been adopted as songs. The most popular of the poem collection include the Shonar Tori (Golden Boat), Rabi Chhaya, Kori o Kamal, Manasi, Chaitali, Naivedya, Kheya, Chayanika, Gitali, Gitimalyo, Shishu Bholanath, Parishesh, Punascha, Prantik, Senjuti, Sanai and Nabajatak to name a few. The most popular of the song collections by the poet include Baul, Chhobi o Gaan, Sandhya Sangeet, Prabhat Sangeet and Bhanu-shingher Podaboli. It is said that there isn't any emotion that Rabindranath Tagore has not captured in his poems and songs. His songs are popularly known as 'Rabindra Sangeet'.

Short Stories of Rabindranath Tagore

The most famous short story collection by Rabindranath Tagore is called 'Golpo Guchho'. He was one of the earliest propounder of short stories in Bengali. Before him, very few writers experimented with this form in Bengali Literature. Some of the very popular short stories by Tagore include 'Kabuliwala', 'Strir Potro', ' Kshudito Pashaan', 'Chhuti' and 'Aparichita'. The subjects of his stories had caused much controversy among the intelligentsia of the day
but have ultimately found its way to the right place.

Musical Dramas by Rabindranath Tagore

The dramas of Tagore can be differentiated as the ordinary theater dramas and the musical drama. The Musical Dramas are collection of songs, which had been specially written for them to be enacted by danseuse. Chittrangoda, Rokto Korobi, Prakritir Protishod, Mayar Khela, Visarjan, Raja or Rani, Balmiki Pratibha, Basanta, Kal Mrigoya, Shesh Borshon, Tasher Desh and Ritu Rongo are some of the popular musical dramas, which have always been popular with the audience.

Other Literary Works of Rabindranath Tagore

Tagore did not leave any genre of literature un-experimented. He has to his credit a number of essays and periodicals, in which he dealt with political and social issues. Alochona, Shomalochona, Vividha Prosongo, Atmasakti, Panchabut, Adhunik Shaityo and Bharot Borsho comprise some of the essays. He also wrote novels. Chokher Bali, Ghore Baire, Gora, Noshtoneer, Rajorshi, Bauthakuranir Haat, Naukadubi are very popular. Chokher Bali and Ghore Baire have been made into films.

Contribution of Rabindranath Tagore in Education

Tagore was against the conventional style of education. He wanted students to grow up and study amidst natural ambiance. With this objective, the Shantiniketan study center was founded. It has now attained the status of School and University. The Bosonto Utshob and the the Poush Mela are important events of Santiniketan. The students can opt for a number of vocational subjects. Tagore himself had introduced important handicrafts works such as batik, leather works and wooden works.
