Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) was established on 8th May 1962. This University of Kolkata was set up according to Government’s Rabindra Bharati Act of 1961. The foundation of this University pays tribute to the 100th year of birth of Rabindranath Tagore.
In the beginning, the faculties of Visual Arts and Fine Arts were set up in the residence of Tagore. As the university expanded, another campus of Rabindra Bharati University was set up at 56 A, B.T. Road, Kolkata-700 050.
At this new campus in Calcutta, the faculty of Arts was set up in 1976. The administrative section of this University is also located in the similar campus. This new campus is part of the Emerald Bower, which was built by one of Tagore’s uncle known as Harakumar Tagore.
Chairman and Chancellor of RBU is Sri Gopal Krishna Gandhi and Professor Karuna Sindhu Das is the Vice-Chancellor. The Secretary and Registrar of RBU is Dr. Santosh Kumar Ghorai. This University has received recognition from U.G.C.
Courses Offered by Rabindra Bharati University
RBU offers B.A. Honors in Fine Arts and Arts subjects. The courses are of 3 years duration. Students can also study B.A. Special Honors in Fine Arts for 2 years. There is a 1 year graduation course in Library and Information Science. Bachelor of Visual Arts can be taken up for 4 years. The University conducts post graduation courses as well. M.A. for 2 years can be pursued in Fine Arts, Arts and Visual Arts.
Rabindra Bharati University in Calcutta offers Ph. D. courses to students in all subjects. M.Phil of 2 years and D.Litt programs are also conducted in RBU. A 1 year course of B. Ed can also be studied here. 1 year Diploma in Tagore literature is offered here. From School of Language and Culture, one can pursue courses on various languages. RBU also has facilities for Adult Continuing Education.

Rabindra Bharati University has 21 libraries in total. The Central Library of RBU occupies about 13,000 sq feet of area. In 2001, it has been set up in Kendriya Granthagar Bhavan. From Monday to Friday, the Central Library of RBU can be accessed from 10.15 am to 6.30 pm. On Saturdays, it remains open from 10.15 am to 5.45 pm. On holidays and Sundays, it remains closed.
Other than the main library of the institution, there are 17 Departmental Libraries set up by the University. These libraries can be accessed by the students of faculties of Visual Arts, Fine Arts and Arts.
The Rabindra Bharati University arranges financial help for the needy students with extraordinary merit or talents. Students suitable for this kind of aid are nominated from the first two academic years of graduation and first year of post graduation by the respective head of the departments. The final selection of the students rests upon the Vice Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University and other officials. From the university, three students are usually selected every year for financial grant. Each student may receive a maximum amount of 30,000 rupees.
