Presidency College in Kolkata was established on 20th January, 1817. This college was first known as Hindu college and was later renamed as Presidency. Initially, this institution had 20 scholars and the administrative power of the college was vested upon 4 directors and 2 governors. Babu Gopee Mohan Thakoor and Maharaja Tejchandra Bahadur were the 1st Governors of this college, whereas Babu Joykissen Sinha, Babu Gopeemohan Deb and Babu Radha Madhab Banerjee were the first Secretaries.
Initially, the classes used to take place in a house taken on rent whose landlord was Gorachand Bysack. Later in 1818 this well-known College shifted to the house of Kamal Bose. This building has a great historic background. Raja Ram Mohan Ray officially inaugurated his Brahma Sabha in the Presidency College, Calcutta. Thereafter the college campus was shifted to Bowbazar.
Now, the college campus of Presidency is located at 86/1, College Street. This college campus covers around 14.5 acres of land. Presidency College in Kolkata houses a Boys’ Hostel called Eden Hindu Hostel and a Girls’ Hostel. The Main Buildings of this college include:
