Patha Bhavan, one of the best co-education schools in Kolkata, was founded by Patha Bhavan Society. Smt. Uma Shehanabish was one of the prominent founding members of the school on 28th June in 1965 when it was established. This remained a privately owned institute and the society is responsible for its governance.
Some of the renowned personalities like film maker Satyajit Ray, Dr. Amiya Bose, Professor Sushobhan Sarkar and Justice Tarun Kumar Bose were attached to Patha Bhavan after the formation of the institution.
In the initial years, Patha Bhavan School was set up in the rented premise of 103 A & C, Ballygunge Place, Calcutta- 700 019. In 1968, classes for Nursery up to class seven were started in this building. Under the Managing Committee Rules of 1969, a separate managing committee was set up for the senior school. The President of the 13 members committee is Sri Sadhan Gupta and Sri Ashis Kumar Banerjee is its present secretary.
As the school received affiliation from W.B.B.S.E during the 70s, the necessity for a separate committee was felt. The primary department of Patha Bhavan remained under the already functioning Society while Patha Bhavan High School came under a new Managing Committee.
Gradually with the increase of students it became difficult to conduct all the classes in the same building. For this purpose, the Primary department of Patha Bhavan, Kolkata was shifted to a new building at 13/1, Palm Avenue.

As more and more students enrolled with the Primary department, in 1976 the need was felt to shift the Montessori or the Pre-primary department to a new venue of 5/1, Swinhoe Street. In 1975, the Government of West Bengal allotted a land to the school at 8/1, Gariahat Road.
The shifting of the classes to separate buildings was mainly for the better accommodation of the pupil. The division of the committee of the school was solely for technical purposes and this did not affected the harmony of the school.
The founding members of Patha Bhavan, Kolkata were influenced by the philosophy and ideologies of Rabindranath Tagore who incorporated his teachings in Shantiniketan. Patha Bahavan has always encouraged a system of experimental learning from its inception.
Patha Bhavan gives importance to Bengali; the mother tongue. English is also given importance in this institution. Co-curricular activities are very much encouraged here. The school not only aims at imparting proper education to its students but also wants their all round development. For the physically challenged students, the school has reserved 3% of the total seats.
Teachers of Patha Bhavan provide individual attention towards their students. Till class 4, the school does not take any examination to assess the students. The students getting admission to class 5 neither has to appear for an admission test. Teachers maintain regular contact with the guardian to understand each child and his requirements better.
