Netaji Subhas Open University


Netaji Subhas Open University or NSOU is one of the prominent universities of Kolkata. This Open University has been established in Calcutta in 1997 after an Act was passed in the same year. The University is located at 1, Woodburn Park, Kolkata- 700 020 in West Bengal. The Vice Chancellor of Netaji Subhas Open University is Dr. Surabhi Banerjee.

Netaji Subhas Open University has been set up in the name of Subhas Chandra Bose to honor the great hero of India. Netaji Subhas Open University has accepted membership in The Association of Indian Universities or AIU.

Study Centers of Netaji Subhas Open University

This University has set up about 145 study centers till date. The study centers of the University have been set up in most of the districts of state of West Bengal. A coordinator has been appointed for each of the study centers. The students have to collect study materials for distance education programs from their nearest study centers. The University mainly wants to create opportunity for the unprivileged and poor section of the society. It offers stipend to meritorious students who are economically unprivileged.

Netaji Subhas Open University during 2001 to 2005 signed MoU with some of the institutions of India. It is also associated with NASSCOM. The University arranges regular seminars, conferences and workshops for the benefit of the students. Some of the institutions with which the University is related are:

  • Chennai Mathematical Institute in Chennai

Courses Offered at Netaji Subhas Open University

Recently two new courses have been introduced by Netaji Subhas Open University. One is a Post Graduate Diploma course in Radio and Television Journalism and Mass Communication and another is a B.Com Honors program. There are a number of other courses that are offered by the Netaji Subhas Open University. Some of them are:
  • Diploma courses (Yoga Therapy, Advanced Pre-Primary Teachers' Training, Photography)
  • PG Diploma courses (English Language Teaching, Journalism and Mass Communication)
