Nehru Children’s Museum of Kolkata opens the door to a world of knowledge, fun and experience. It introduces every child to a new method of gaining knowledge, where a child learns playfully. It aims at making the learning process easily acceptable to all children. To reduce the boredom of study, the museum offers various projects by which a child gains knowledge, informally. It offers awards, scholarships and numerous facilities that contribute to boost the child's interest in studies. The various informal methods of learning create an impact on the young mind, thus urging him to learn more and grow more.
History of Nehru Children’s Museum
Nehru Children’s Museum was founded by Jugal Srimal in 1945 and opened on 14th November1972, on the occasion of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru’s birthday. Nehru loved children very much. Therefore as a tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru, the museum was named after him. It was part of the National Cultural Association that aimed to impart informal knowledge to the child.
Nehru Children’s Museum Collections
The museum has four major sections spreading across the four floors of the building.
- Dolls Section: Children will find dolls from 88 different countries, displayed in this gallery. Dolls, which are brought from Thailand, are a special attraction of this section. All the dolls are dressed beautifully and colorfully, which helps children learn about the traditional dress of every country.
- Toys Section: In this gallery, different kinds of toys are exhibited, some of which are a rare collection.

Children enjoy seeing the variety of toys, which provided them relaxation and refreshment from the boredom of study.
- Ramayana: This section reveals the different sections of the great epic in a chronological manner to the visitors. Idols of mythological characters from Ramayana like Rama, Sita, Laxman and Ravana are displayed in this gallery. Children become curious to know more about the figures displayed and thus learn about them while moving along the gallery.
- Mahabharata: In this gallery, the epic has been beautifully described by means of idols of the epic figures like Judhisthira, Duryodhana, Arjuna and Karna. The gallery displays the major preachings of Lord Krishna during the war of Kurukhshetra.

The major projects undertaken by Nehru Children’s Museum in Calcutta include Ankur, Jawahar Shishu Bhavan and the Vidyasagar Academy. Ankur aims to spread education amongst children and make the learning process enjoyable. It also emphasizes on physical training and sports. It also imparts training in computers (software and hardware), interior decoration and recitation. Jawahar Shishu Bhavan is working since the year 1972. It offers a diploma course in dance, recitation and painting for duration of 3 years. Vidyasagar Academy center was opened in 1985 to provide vocational education to the students. It also offers training in computers within an affordable range.
