Loreto College can be ranked as one of the best institutions for girls in India. The college has been established by the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (I.B.V.M). Affiliated to the University of Calcutta, Loreto College, Calcutta has set a high standard of college education both for the catholics as well as for the other communities. Loreto education aims at enhancing and developing the quality of leadership and fellow feeling in one and all. History of Loreto College Kolkata
The establishment of Loreto institutions had been implemented by the order of Mary Ward, an English lady, Catholic by birth during the end of the 16th century. Loreto College dates back to the year 1912, when it was established by the I.B.V.M. The college was an extended building of the Loreto house school on the Middleton row. Initially the college comprised 4 staff members and 10 students. At that time the primary focus was to guide students in a way as to make them efficient in the teaching profession. Mother Baptist Reville opened the arts faculty as well as the library of the college. The L.T and B.T classes were managed and conducted under the guidance of Mother Joseph Antonia Burke.

The college offers degree courses (honors, general and post graduate), special courses and certificate courses to the students.
- Degree courses : Education, Hindi, English, Geography Economics, Political, Science, Journalism & Mass, English, Psychology, Bengali, Computer Application, Human Rights, Communicative English and Film Studies. The college also provides post graduate degree in education.(B.ED)

- Computer center - The computer lab is equipped with facilities like 2 LCD projector, 2 Laptop, 4 O.H.P, Bar code scanner, Handy cam, 4 Scanner, 5 Inject printer, 52 Computers, Digital camera, 3 Laser printer and 2 Splitter with 6 monitor
- Library - Well stocked with academic books, literatures in various languages, religious, philosophical and biographical works, periodicals, newspapers, collection of CDs. Open throughout the week between 8 am and 5 pm. Sundays for a few hours.
- Free Internet Access- The students and teachers of the college can use the computers without paying any charge
- Career counseling - The students are guided with different career options to choose. They are also groomed for appearing in interviews through short term programs.

Admission to Loreto College
- A student with 50% marks and above in the desired subject and 50% marks in aggregate, can apply for honors courses. At the Higher Secondary Level he or she should obtain a pass mark in all the 5 major subjects including English.
- There are a few reserved seats for ST, SC and OBC and physically handicapped persons.
- The final procedure of selection includes a writing test, interview, examining the school reports as well as the marks obtained in the examinations.
