La Martinere Girls' School


La Martiniere Girls' School is among the leading girl schools of Kolkata. Calcutta La Martiniere for Girls' School was established by Major General Claude Martin in 1836 along with La Martiniere for Boys' School in the same compound. Currently it is one of the premier girls school in Kolkata city imparting education in English.

La Martiniere Girls' School History

Kolkata La Martiniere Girls' School was set up in an independent premise in 1840 and in 1857 it got affiliated to the University of Calcutta. Around the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century girls were educated to be married off gracefully and in worthy families. During this phase the number of girl students outnumbered the boys. The girls were taught literature, languages, science, and music and dancing.

La Martiniere Girls' School Academics

Girls in La Martiniere School are admitted in Lower Nursery after they have attained the age of three years. They can continue studying in this school till class XII. La Martiniere for Girls' School follows the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination curricula for both class X and class XII examinations.

In class eleven the girls have to study English, an India language, and either Science, Humanities, or Commerce subjects. The Science subjects include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Sciences. Aamong the Humanities subjects a pupil can choose from Geography, History, Economics, Home Science, Modern Governments, Singing,Art, Moral Science, and Physical Training.
The Commerce subjects include Accounts, Economics, Commerce, Mathematics, and Computer studies.

The girls do not have to appear for any formal examination for promotion between Nursery and class V. Promotion is based on continuous evaluation of the pupils throughout the year. Each of the three terms carries an equal weightage of 33.33%. From class six to eight the students need to pass in English, an India language, History and Civics, Geography, and at least three more subjects. The first and second term examinations constitute 25% each, while the final examination constituted the remaining 50%.

In class IX, a girl student must pass in English, an Indian language, and three more subjects for getting promotion to class ten. In class XI a pupil has to pass in English and any four subjects.

La Martiniere Girls' School Activities

Apart from academics La Martiniere School for Girls is famous for extra-curricular activities. There are basketball courts, swimming pool, a playground, and an auditorium for facilitating sports and dramatic activities. The girls participate in inter-house hockey, and basketball competitions. Dramatics, elocution, debating and quiz competitions are held on a regular basis. La Martinere Girls' School is a renowned name in girls' school rowing, basketball and tennis competitions.
