La Martiniere Boys' School


La Martiniere Boys' School is a premier English medium school of Kolkata. Established in 1836 by Major General Claude Martin, La Martiniere Boys' School in Kolkata was set up for the general benefit of Calcutta residents. This Kolkata School was established to provide liberalized education to beginners and day scholars.

About thirty poor Christian boys are admitted to the school, who are educated and supported by the school itself.

La Martiniere Boys' School Academics

Kolkata La Martiniere for Boys' School follows the Council for the School Certificate Examinations curricula for both class ten and class twelve levels. Boys are admitted to Lower Nursery class after they have completed 3 years of age and can continue studying till class 12.

The promotion to classes is based on continuous assessment rather than on performance in terminal examinations. In fact, from class I to V there are no formal examinations, and the three academic terms carry equal weightage. A student must pass in at least six subjects. From class VI to VIII a student has to pass in at least 7 subjects including English, Second language, Geography, History-civics, and three more subjects. The 1st and 2nd term examination contributes 25% each, and the final term 50%.

In class 9 boys must pass in English, Second language, and any three more subjects. In class 11 a student needs to pass in English and any four elective subjects.

As per Council for the School Certificate Examination, New Delhi syllabus, La Martiniere Boys' School offers Commerce, Humanities, Life Science and Physical Science courses.

La Martiniere Boys' School Activities

The boys of La Martiniere School in Calcutta are divided into four houses: Martin (blue), Macaulay (yellow), Hastings (red), and Charnock (green). Inter house competitions are held in cricket, football, athletics, basketball, hockey and rugby. In addition to the above La Martiniere for Boys' participates is inter-school sporting events in rowing, boxing, tennis, table tennis and chess.

Apart from sporting activities the school organizes NCC, quizzing, elocution, music orchestra, debating, dramatics, scouts, pipe band, and social activity programs under Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (DUKE).

La Martiniere Boys' School Information

The school commences at 8 am, and remains closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Pupils from Nursery to class 7 are required to wear white shorts, white half sleeved shirts 9full sleeved on special occasions), school tie, white socks, black laced shoes, house shirts and navy blue shorts, and white canvas shoes for P.E. Class and games, and school belt.

Students from classes 8 to 12 need to wear white half shirts (full sleeved on special occasions), white pair of trousers, school belt and tie, black laced shoes, white socks, house shirts, blue shorts and white canvas shoes for P.E.and games.

Winter dresses are slightly different in the form that gray worsted shorts and trousers, and school blazers are worn.

Dr. Nurul Hasan. Leander Paes, Vijay Mallya, Justice Jiten Chaudhury, Pronoy Roy, Dr. Ron Ghosh are some of the prominent students of this school.
