Kolkata Weekly Vacation
One week is the right period to visit Kolkata. The various tourist attractions like the Indian Museum, Victoria Memorial, Marble Palace, Jorasanko Thakurbari, Science City, Nicco Park, Kalighat Kali Temple, and St. Paul's Cathedral can be visited within one week.
Jorasanko Thakurbari and Marble Palace can be visited in the same day as they are in close proximity. Victoria Memorial, St. Paul's Cathedral, Kalighat Kali Temple, and the Birla Museum can be visited on a single day. Both the Nicco Park and the Science City require a day each for visiting. Another day can be spent in visiting the Indian Museum in the morning, and the Strand and Eden Gardens in the afternoon and evening. A day's excursion will take a visitor to Dakshineswar Kali Temple and Belur Math.
The evenings can be spent in movie houses, theaters, nightclubs or social clubs.

Shantiniketan about 140 km from Kolkata was set up by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. It is the seat of Visva Bharati University established by the great poet himself. There is a museum in Shantiniketan displaying the articles of use and memorablia of Gurudev Rabindranth Tagore and his family members.
Murshidabad is the ancient capital of Bengal when Siraj-ud-Daula was the ruler during the 18th century. The palace of 1000 doors or 'Hazaarduari' is an architectural marvel. Malda is the site of ancient Pal rulers of Bengal. Murshidabad is about 200 km north of Kolkata and Malda around 250 km in the same direction.
Sunderbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world is just about 100 km south of Kolkata. There are regular tours conducted by the West Bengal Tourism Department during the months from November to March. Tickets should be booked well in advance to avoid disappointments.
Bankura is a center for rural handicrafts. It is located at about a distance of 150 km in a south westerly direction from Kolkata.
All these trips take a couple of days each. Hotels and travel agents make proper arrangements for these short trips.
