Jyoti Basu


Jyoti Basu took birth on 8th July, 1914. He was born at Harrish Road in the city of Kolkata. He is a renowned Communist leader of West Bengal. In the year 1977 Basu was elected the Chief Minister of West Bengal. He continued in this prestigious position till 2000.

The fishery and agriculture of the state of West Bengal improved under Basu’s government. Land reform measures were also undertaken during his political tenure. Political stability was sought after the rise of the Maoists in the state during 1970s.

Jyoti Basu completed his schooling from the St. Xavier’s School, and then took admission at the Presidency College in Calcutta. He graduated in English Honors from this prestigious college. Afterwards, from Calcutta, he went to London to pursue Law from Middle Temple.

During his stay in United Kingdom, Jyoti Basu met some of the noted personalities of Great Britain’s Communist Party like Ben Bradley, Rajani Palme Dutt and Harry Pollitt. He was strongly influenced by Marxist ideologies. Also, Jyoti Basu
served as India League’s member in London. Basu was chosen as the Secretary of London Majlis. He also took part in Federation of Indian Students in Great Britain.

Basu continued to practice Law when he returned to India. He also joined the Communist Party of India. He started participating in trade union activities of many organizations. He played major roles in All India Railwaymen’s Federation and B.A. Railroad Workers’ Union.

From 1952 to 57, Jyoti Basu was appointed as the Secretary of West Bengal Provincial Committee maintained by the CPI. Jyoti Basu was elected in 1946 in the Bengal Legislative Assembly. He was elected for a number of times to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly between the years1952 to 1996. From 1957 to 67, in West Bengal Legislative Assembly Jyoti Basu remained the leader of the Opposition.

Jyoti Basu has also worked as a Deputy Chief Minister in 1967 and 1969 in West Bengal. Then he took over as the Chief Minister of the state as the Head of Left Front Government. He became the CM for 5 times. Jyoti Basu is also CPI (M) Polit Bureau’s member.
