The foundation stone of the IISER Kolkata was laid by Dr. Manmohan Singh, the honorable Prime Minister of India in 2006. The campus of this institute is located in the IIT Kharagpur extension center in Salt Lake City. The institute enjoys autonomy and has another branch in Pune.
Admission to IISER
There is no particular entrance examination to get admission to the IISER Calcutta. All students who clear whether the Indian National Olympiad, the Joint Entrance Examination of IIT or have been short listed for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna can seek admission to IISER. There are a total of 100 seats in IISER. The session starts around July or August every year.
The Courses in IISER
The institute offers integrated masters degree courses

in all subjects of basic science, including mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology, integrated and full Ph. D. program. The students who take up integrated masters course have to study all the basic science subjects including computer science in the first two years. The third and fourth years are the time for specialization when students must choose among the four basic subjects. In the fifth year, the students are expected to carry out extensive research work and undergo specialized training.
Students' Facilities in IISER
As the campus of the college has not been fully developed, the library and the teaching laboratory are located at different places. While the library is located in the Extension Center of the IIT Kharagpur in Salt Lake, the laboratory is presently stationed at Salt Lake Teachers' Training Institute. The computer center is yet to be developed. Also, a medical center will be maintained for emergency purpose.
