Howrah Bridge was built in the year 1939 over Hoogli River in Kolkata. As one of the major attractions of Kolkata, Howrah Bridge has a length of 450 m. The vehicles and pedestrians were allowed to pass through the Bridge from the year 1943.
Being supported by 280 ft high towers that are placed at a distance of 76 ft from each other, Howrah Bridge was constructed without nuts or bolts. A balanced structure having no pylons, Howrah Bridge has 325 ft anchor arms. There are two 15 ft footpaths on both sides of the Bridge. Also, the Bridge Deck measures 71 feet. Recently on 23rd of November, 2006, Howrah Bridge became one of the lighted bridges with Magenta and Gold color illumination.
