The Calcutta High Court is the oldest High Court in India. It was founded on 2nd July, 1862. Calcutta High Court is the main civil court of original jurisdiction in West Bengal. The Calcutta High Court has a circuit bench at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Island. After the name of Calcutta city was changed to Kolkata, the name of Calcutta High Court was retained.
Calcutta High Court has the right to interpret and apply the law over the state of West-Bengal and the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Calcutta High Court deals with a large number of cases including civil suits, matrimonial suits, award cases, testamentary suits, criminal cases and income tax cases. The Calcutta High Court has the strength of 50 sanctioned judges.
The President of India, in consultation with the Chief Justice and Governor of West Bengal, appoints Judges in Calcutta High Court.

the building of Calcutta High Court. Calcutta High Court was established under the High Court Act, 1861. It was previously called as High Court of Judicature at Fort William. Sir Barnes Peacock was the first Chief Justice in High Court of Judicature at Fort William. Justice Sumboo Nath Pandit was the first Indian Judge at Calcutta High Court. Justice Ramesh Chandra Mitter, Justice Dwarka Nath Mitter, Sir Gurudas Banerjee, Sir Chunder Madhab Ghosh, Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee and Justice P.B.Chakravartti were the notable legal personalities engaged with Calcutta High Court. Sankar Prasad Mitra was the longest serving Chief Justice at Calcutta High Court.
