Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College, a well-known college in Kolkata, was set up in the year 1938. The college was established as a tribute to the well-known freedom fighter and educationists Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College is situated at 1/1, Harish Mukherjee Road, Kolkata- 20.
The first principal of this college was Dr. S.E. Rani Ghosh. Till her death (in 1961) she remained the principal of Gokhale school and college. In 1957 Gokhale College, Calcutta got certification for teaching Psychology by the University of Calcutta.
In 1968 the first Honors Graduates batch passed out from Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College. Some of the Departments of Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College include English, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Education, History and Mathematics. The main goal of this educational institute is to make all-round development of the students.
Apart from textual studies, the students are also encouraged to participate in the extra-curricular

activities. However, this famous college of Kolkata is very strict about the maintenance of disciplines. All the students are expected to attend classes at right time. Added to this, pupils are requested to bring their Identity Card regularly. If someone becomes unable to attend classes for few consecutive days, he/she should produce medical certificate.
Some of the remarkable facilities offered by the Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College include library, special presentations, public telephone, canteen, counseling center and several others. Admission to this college is purely based on students' merit.
The college also provides reservations for the SC and ST group. Priyanshu Shekhar Bhattacharya Memorial prize and Abha Mukhopadhyay Memorial prize are given to the students for their brilliant performances.
Some of the vocational subjects offered by the college are Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Communicative English, Sales Promotion and Sales Management and Advertising.
