Fort William

Located in the middle of Kolkata, beside Maidan, Fort William reflects the predominance of the British rule during the ancient times. One of the important attractions of Calcutta, Fort William is easily accessible from all parts of the city by road, rail and metro rail. Constructed in the year of 1781 by Sir Robert Clive, the historic Fort William encompasses a total area of 532 bighas.

The well planned design of Fort William portrays the zenith of architectural development of the Englishmen. Fort William was built by the British rulers to strengthen their military base in Calcutta. After the Englishmen lost to Siraj-ud-Daula in 1756, the British East India Company became aware of the military prowess of the Indians. To counter check the growing military power of the Indians, the officials of the East India Company
decided to erect the splendid Fort.

At present, Fort William is the headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. The huge Fort can support 10,000 army personals at a single point of time. The premises of Fort William houses sprawling shopping malls, movie halls, food joint, swimming pool, post office and playgrounds. The civilians can visit Fort William on week days from 10 in the morning to 5.30 in the evening. The canteen of the Fort is flooded with quality goods which are available at subsidized rates.

Fort William wears a festive look on days of national importance. The march past ceremony during the Independence Day and the Republic Day shows the discipline and patriotism of the Indian Army.
