Chittaranjan Das


Chittaranjan Das, popularly known as 'Deshbandhu', was a renowned political leader of India and a supporter of Gandhi's non-cooperation movement (1919 to1922). In 1924, Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das became the Mayor of Kolkata. He was born on 5th November 1870 and died on 16th June 1925.

An Overview of The life of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das:
  • 1885: Chittaranjan Das passed the entrance examination
  • 1890: He completed his graduation from Presidency College, Kolkata
  • 1893: Das became a Barrister
  • 1917: He actively joined in national politics. In the same year he acted as a President of Bengal Provincial Conference.
  • 1919: Chittaranjan Das publicly announced his discontinuation from law practice on protest to the introduction of Indian Reform Act.
  • 1920: He played a significant role in protesting against the arrival of Prince of Wales in Calcutta
  • 1921: Deshbandhu was arrested. Addressing to the crowd while in police van, he proclaimed, “Victory is in sight, if you are prepared to win it through suffering."
  • 1922: He elected as the President of the Gaya Congress Session.
  • 1923: He founded the Swaraj party along with Motilal Nehru
  • 1924: Chittaranjan Das became the Mayor of Calcutta
  • 1925: He died on 16th June in Darjeeling, West Bengal
Professional Life as a Barrister

In 1893, Chittaranjan Das became a barrister and eventually registered his name as a barrister at Honorable High Court of Calcutta. While practicing in High Court of Calcutta, he handled the famous Alipore Bomb case with skills and courage. He ultimately defended two famous freedom fighters, Bipin Chandra Pal and Aurobindo Ghosh.

Chittaranjan Das: Mayor of Calcutta Corporation

In 1924 Calcutta Corporation election, the Swarajists won by a huge margin and Chittaranjan Das became the Mayor of Calcutta (Now Kolkata). Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Calcutta Corporation. During his tenure in Calcutta Corporation, Chittaranjan Das handled various welfare projects with efficiency.
