The official name of Calcutta University is the University of Calcutta, though it is better known to the locals by the former name. This is the oldest higher education institute of Kolkata, which was founded by the British Raj in 1857. Most of the colleges in Kolkata are affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The main campus of the university is meant for post graduation studies and the colleges take care of the graduation studies.
The University of Calcutta grants bachelors degree, masters degree, M. Phil Degree and also Doctorate degree. Students can opt for courses in arts, science, commerce, law, engineering and also certain self sponsored subjects. Active teaching and learning was introduced in Calcutta University much later in 1904. The Presidency College was one of the first colleges to be included by the Calcutta University. Famous personalities such as Noble Laureate Amartya Sen, C.V. Raman and Satyajit Ray had been students of this prestigious university.
The Campuses of Calcutta University
The main campus of the university is located in Senate House, 87/1, College Street, Kolkata-700073. Most of the departments are housed in this main complex. Also, the main office and the library are located in the College Street Campus. The economics department has been shifted to the B.T. Road campus. The Alipore Campus is the venue where courses in management, social sciences, political science, history and sociology are taught. The names of the campuses have been given in the following list:
