Buddhadev Dasgupta early life
Buddhadev Dasgupta was born in Bhagalpurin in Bihar in 1933 on February 1st. His father was a government employee and Buddhadev Dasgupta grew up in a middle-class environment. As an ardent lover of classical music he started to train under Pandit Radhika Mohon Maitra (popularly called Radu Babu). During those times classical music as a profession was not encouraged as it was neither paying nor prestigious.
Hence, Buddhadev Bhattacharya simultaneously studied mechanical engineering along with his music lessons. He took up the job of a mechanical engineer and worked in a private engineering concern for thirty two years.

as a regular performer of All India Radio since 1949. His music compositions were a combination of traditional Afghan style learnt from his 'guru' Radu Babu, and his own personal improvisations. This distinguishing style helped him in becoming one of the original sarod players in India.
Budhdhadev Dasgupta belonging to the Seniya Shahjahanpur Gharana has created some immortal compositions, namely:
- Raga Ahir Bhairav
- Nayak Ki Kanra
- Rare Morning Ragas
- A New Dimensiion to Sarod
Pandit Dasgupta also has experimented successfully with Rabindra Sangeet (songs composed by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore). This was a pioneering effort of this music exponent.
In 1954, Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta was the first Indian sarod player to perform overseas. He made his international debut in Europe, followed by tours to Canada, United States of America, Australia, and Japan.
Buddhadev Dasgupta was awarded the Sangeet Natak Academy award in 1993. The Asian Paints Shiromani Award was awarded to him twice in 1989 and 1992.
