Kolkata BSNL has completed 125 years of service in the capital city of West Bengal. Kolkata BSNL started functioning from 30th June, 1882 as the Central Exchange at 7, Council House Street.. The Central Telephone Exchange started operations with 93 subscribers.
Kolkata BSNL History
After beginning its operation in 1882 the Central Telephone Exchange shifted to 1, Council House Street in 1899. Simultaneously the management changed hands from the Oriental Telephone Company to the Bengal Telephone Company Limited. Subsequently the control of Calcutta Telephones went to the Indian Post and Telegraphs Department in 1943. In 1985 with the division of the Indian Post and Telegraph Department, Calcutta Telephones went under the control of Department of Telecommunication.
Since 2002 , Kolkata Telephones came under the purview of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to become Kolkata BSNL.
Kolkata BSNL Products
The products offered by BSNL Kolkata for its subscribers include:
- Basic Phone Service – Basic Kolkata Phone Service involves installation and commissioning of basic telephone system with or without ISD and/or STD facilities.
- Wireless Local Loop Service – The WLL service based on CDMA technology is served by 39 base stations.

WLL service can be accessed with either Hand held terminals, or Fixed Wireless terminals
BSNL Mobile - BSNL offers both pre-paid and post-paid mobile services for its subscribers
Integrated Service Digital Network – With the help of ISDN connection a subscriber can have two simultaneous independent telecommunication access using a single pair of connection wires.
Direct Internet Access Service - The DIAS connection is particularly helpful for customers who want to use a telephone and Internet simultaneously over one line.
Intelligent Network Services – The IN service allows the subscriber to operate on a fault resistant platform.
Leased Line – 64 kbps dedicated lines are leased out for establishing private data network.
The other products offered by BSNL Kolkata include Internet Protocol – Virtual Private Network (IP-VPN), Intra net, Broadband service, Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS), Voice Activation Services, and Wireless LAN.
To become more interactive with its customers, BSNL in Kolkata has introduced a range of services. Through 'on-line services' it shows call details, broadband usage, tariffs, and bills to its subscribers. Among the new services offered by Kolkata BSNL are Account Free Instant Internet Service, and Eb Hosting. BSNL also publishes Kolkata Phone Directory for providing ready reference of the telephone numbers of all its subscribers.
