Birla Planetarium is situated in Central Calcutta. Formed in the year 1962, Birla Planetarium today is considered as a premiere institution of astronomy which holds shows on various celestial mechanics. Being one of the prime attractions of Kolkata, Birla Planetarium owes much of its success to Smt. M. P. Birla.
The daily shows conducted by Birla Planetarium are primarily focused on the following:
- Rashis and Nakshatras
- Journey to Antarctic
- New View of the Solar System
All the above shows are conducted in English, Hindi and Bengali language for the easy understandability of one and all. While the English language show is conducted at 1.30 pm and 6.30 pm, the Bengali language show is organized at 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm in the Planetarium. The
show in Hindi language takes place at three different times of the day like 12.30 pm, 2.30 pm and 4.30 pm. Also, one Bengali and one

Hindi show is available at Birla Planetarium on Sundays and on other holidays, apart from the regular shows. A comprehensive overview of the entire Universe including the planets, stars and celestial bodies is provided during the shows.
There are a number of educational programs that are conducted in Birla Planetarium of Kolkata on a regular basis. M. Phil in Astronomy & Planetarium Sciences, evening course in Astronomy at free of cost and Post Graduate Diploma in Astronomy & Planetarium Sciences are the main educational curriculum available in Birla Planetarium.
Known as one of the esteemed institutions where various research works on astronomy are carried out, Birla Planetarium boasts of an well-equipped Electronics Laboratory and an Astronomical Observatory.
