Birla Industrial and Technological Museum located on the Gurusaday Road in Kolkata, is the first science museum in Asia and is aided by the Government of India. The museum was opened to the public on May 2nd, 1959.
The museum’s attractions include the bonsai, artificial ponds, a beautiful garden and different kinds of plants that are helpful in making medicines. Other interesting things to see are the rabbit’s enclosure, non-fall bicycle and salt water and fresh water aquarium. The various interesting sections at BITM include Mock-up Coaline, Surprising Chemical Reactions, Taramandal Show, Super Cold bodies and Science-magic-miracle.

There are a number of Galleries in Birla Industrial and Technological Museum.
- Life Science Gallery: This Gallery displays various exhibits that describe the process of evolution of life on Earth. The Gallery focuses on the three elements, namely, Air, Water and Earth. It also educates visitors on various forms of life on Earth.

- Motive Power Gallery: The exhibits in this gallery shows how man began from a humble beginning and gradually invented the machines to make the world what it is today. The gallery describes neatly the inventions and operations of various machines.
- Electricity Gallery: This section is devoted towards magnetism and electricity. There are a number of exhibits that explains the principles and fundamentals of electricity and magnetism and also touches upon the operations of motor, generators and transformers.
- Electronics Gallery: An interesting section for electronics students, this gallery has in store for visitors many facts and concepts of electronics. The exhibits describe the electronics principles such as diode operations, modulation concepts and microelectronics.
- Popular Science Gallery: This section is devoted towards explaining in simple words the various facts in our day to day life.
- Atom Gallery: Calder Hall Reactor and Thermonuclear Reaction are displayed in this gallery. The function of atoms and the various reactions have been explained to the visitors.
- Transport Gallery: The different kind of transportation modes since the evolution of mankind has been displayed here. Some of the interesting exhibits include the Mayurpankhi, Rocket Locomotive and Cugnot’s car.
- Communication Gallery: This section displays the modes of communication and how they work. It displays Alexander Graham Bell’s Telephone, Telegraph relay system and ‘Runners’ at the postal system.
- Solar Energy Gallery: Some of the exhibits at this section include solar car and solar energy consumption in villages.
- Biotechnology Gallery: This gallery highlights walking through the Cell and the Giant egg. It explains why the DNA molecules and cells inside the human body are important and also states their function.
BITM Kolkata Information
The museum is situated in the heart of the city of Calcutta. It can be accessed easily from Rabindra Sadan Metro Station and Ballygunge station. Tourists can also avail the different state buses, mini buses and private buses in Kolkata.

BITM Kolkata remains open all round the year, between 10 am and 5.30 pm. It is closed only during Diwali and Holi. Rs15 is charged as an entrance fee.
