Bimal Mitra was a prolific novelist who was influenced by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Born in 1912, Bimal Mitra came into prominence after the second World War. He was an exponent in writing both novels and short stories.
Writer Bimal Mitra was equally adept in writing in Bengali as well as in Hindi, and has more than one hundred novels and short stories to his credit. Many of Bimal Mitra's novels have been made into successful films.

- Saheb, Biwi, Ghulam – This is the story of a young bride married to an alcoholic husband in a feudal family and her continuous endeavor to bring her husband back to normality. - Kori Diye Kinlam – In this story Bimal Mitra brings out the pain of a housewife caught between her love for his husband and her tormenting mother-in-law. This novel has also been filmed in Bengali, and enacted as a play.
- Dayare se Bahar - This novel in Hindi is the story of a revolutionary Sekhar, Suruchi - Sekhar's lover, Mrinmoyee – Suruchi's mother, and Sadanand – Suruchi's intellectual father.The story is set against the backdrop of the second World War.
- Jana Gana Mana – Here author Bimal Mitra narrates the story of a young woman Sandhya Ghosh who gives up her life for India's independence. In this novel Bimal Mitra concludes that force needs to be worshiped for keeping alive justice, truthfulness, and goodness.
