The Bethune College is one of the oldest and highly regarded colleges under the University of Calcutta. This all women's educational institute is located at 181, Bidhan Sarani, Kolkata-700003. Admission to the college takes place roughly between June and August and the session starts shortly after the completion of the admission formalities.
The college comprises three buildings, the main building, the Vidyasagar Bhavan, Kadambini Bhavan and the Science Building. The Main building houses the college office and the science library. The arts library is located in the Kadambini Bhavan. The libraries are equipped with computer and Internet service. There are two halls for holding cultural events. A students' hostel is located at a two minutes walking distance from the college.
This reputed college of Kolkata holds monthly examinations for the advantage of the students. It is mandatory for all students to qualify in main test before signing up for the board examinations. At present, there are sixteen departments in the College. Prospective students have to sit for admission tests to take admission to certain streams, such as English and Bengali. The college offers education for honors degree only. There are a number of scholarship schemes granted by the college authorities. Needy and meritorious students can approach the administrative body for help. The college reserves some seats for schedule caste and schedule tribe students.
History of Bethune College
The Bethune College was founded in 1879 as the first institution for womens' education in India. In the first year of the inauguration, the college had just one student, Kadambini Bose. Chandramukhi Basu joined in the year 1883. The two men to be credited with the foundation of the Bethune College are Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar and John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune.

Students' Activities in Bethune College
Students of the Bethune College, Calcutta remain active throughout the year in organizing cultural and sports events. The college fest is usually held in late November and this is called, 'Aalap'. On this occasion, other colleges are invited to participate in tseveral events of sports. The sports meet is held in December. Other cultural events of the college include the annual function, the annual alumni meet, Rabindra jayanti and independence day celebration, to name a few. The students and teachers jointly bring out a magazine, ' Agontuk', which publishes articles of all types in English, Bengali and Hindi. The students go out for excursions, organize blood donation camps and other social welfare activities.
