The leading chemical manufacturer of India, BCPL (Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd.), popularly known as Bengal Chemicals in Calcutta was founded in the year 1901. Previously, it was called Bengal Chemical & Pharmaceutical Works Ltd. (BCPW). Renowned scientist and nationalist Dr. Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray established this well-known organization.

Historical Overview of Bengal Chemicals
Dr. Prafulla Chandra Ray first conceptualized the idea to establish an organization that will produce drugs from homegrown materials and accordingly founded a chemical factory at Maniktala Main Road, Kolkata with the help of 90 workingmen. At that time, it was termed Bengal Chemical & Pharmaceutical Works Ltd. (BCPW). Within a short period of time, BCPW became the first Indian Company to produce quality drugs, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals by utilizing domestic technology, expertise and raw materials. BCPW got the support of renowned personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Ch. Bose, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. B.C. Ray, Dr. Nilratan Sarkar, Dr. R.G.Kar, and Shri Rajsekhar Basu.
During 1920's, BCPW started to produce multi products and quickly became the leader in chemicals and pharmaceuticals manufacturing in India.
In 1980, Bengal Chemicals became a Public Sector company.

The BCPL (Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd.), the pioneering chemical company of Bengal is presently having four factories. Two factories are located in West Bengal, one in Kanpur and one in Mumbai. BCPL has an appreciable number of sales outlets that are distributed all over India.

categorized as Industrial Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Cosmetics and home products.
- Industrial Chemicals include sulphuric acid, Aluminium Sulphate (Ferric) and Aluminium Sulphate (Non Ferric). Aluminium Sulphate (Ferric) can be used as an outstanding water disinfectant and Aluminium Sulphate (Non Ferric) is used to enhance the quality of paper.
Pharmaceuticals include antiseptic, pharmaceutical generics, pharmaceutical branded and disinfectant.
- Pharmaceutical generics include various capsules like Ampicillin, Ciprofloxacin, Rifampicin, Cephalexin, Cloxacillin and tablets like Norfloxacin, Ethumbutal, Paracetamol, Ibuprofen, Nimesulide and Metronidazole. Some of the Pharmaceutical branded products include Raynpillin tablet, Ciproben tablet, Citrasol, Kalmegh, , Kasatol, Eutheria, Katazol and Glutasol. Antiseptics and disinfectants include Benzalkonium, Cetrimide, Silver Sulfadiazine and Hospitol. Some of the popular herbal medicinal products of BCPL include Asvan and Chyavanpras.
- BCPL also produces essential cosmetics and home products including Pheneol, Bleaching Powder and hair oil (branded name Cantharidine). Some of the other necessary home products include Napthalene (White) Balls and liquid soap.
Exports
BCPL plans to sell their quality products to overseas. BCPL authenticates to manufacture WHO-GMP standard products at exceedingly competitive prices to meet the demands of global markets.
Joint venture
On 3rd December 2003, BCPL signed a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Evans Vanodine International PLC, Preston, UK, to produce and promote Evans Vanodine products in India and adjacent countries for a period of 5 years.
