Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay


Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay is a renowned Bengali novel and essay writer. On 27th June, 1838, this great man was born in Kantalpara (near Naihati). In 1858, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay completed his graduation from Calcutta University, and in 1869 he completed his degree course of law. When he was only eleven years old he tied his knot with Rajlaxmi Devi.

The literary career of Bankim Chandra begun with the publication of Sambad Prabhakar. “RajMohan's Wife” was a famous English novel of Bankim Chandra, whereas, Durgeshnandini was a well-written Bengali novel.

On the other hand, Bangodarshan magazine acquired high popularity under the supervision of Bankim Chandra. His 14 novels and other literary creations dealt with art, science, economics, literature, philosophy, society and religion.

Samrat Bankim Chandra highly respected his mother-tongue and also expected the same from others. His language proficiency, reasonable judgment, sense of humor and strong personality were reflected through his literary work. Through his bold writing, he arouses sense of awareness among his readers. Apart from being a world renowned writer, he played role of critic.

He was free from all sorts of superstitions and also tried to dispel the same from the minds of his readers. He always encouraged people to think reasonably. “Krishnacharitra” is one of his famous classical literatures. Kamalakanter Daptar, on the other hand reflects his satirical tone along with the sense of humor.

His sense of patriotism is also been reflected through some of his writings. Bande Mataram, is written by him. In the true sense, it arouses the sense of brotherhood and patriotism among the countrymen.

Some of his essays include Lok Rahasya, Bijnan Rahasya, Bichitra Prabandha and Samyaand. On the other hand, poetry collection includes Lalita O Manas.

On 4th April, 1894, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee died. At that time, he was doing a major project on Puranic literature and ancient Indian Veda. However his unexpected death, caused a sudden end to this project.
